ReelShort’s Parent Is Suing the Owner of DramaWave Over Copyright, and the Answer Is Due 2026-09-21
Court records show ReelShort’s parent suing Kunlun Tech’s Skywork AI for copyright infringement, with an answer due 2026-09-21. In the same week Kunlun reported that over 90% of DramaWave’s new titles are AI-generated and that the business earns more than $65 million a month. Six companies gained, none fell, and Omdia put the first independent number on American demand.
The Week in Review
The Cheapest Way to Make a Micro-Drama Has an Unanswered Copyright Question Underneath It
This was a disclosure week, and the disclosures did what they were expected to do. Kunlun Tech and iQIYI both reported, both moved, and both did it on the strength of AI-produced content. Kunlun says over 90% of DramaWave’s new July titles were machine-generated and that the segment earns more than $65 million a month. iQIYI says AI-generated work accounted for over half of its micro-drama unique visitors in June, and that AI cuts production cost and time by 70% to 90% on the formats that suit it. Between them they scored +1.25 this issue, more than every other movement combined.
The court filing is what makes those two paragraphs sit differently. ReelShort’s parent is suing Kunlun’s AI arm for copyright infringement, and the answer is due 2026-09-21. The complaint has been on the docket since 2026-03-23; service was waived in June. This ranking has scored ReelShort at first place and DramaWave at ninth every week since, and recorded neither the case nor the relationship. That is a gap in the ranking, not in the companies.
The exposure is not really about two companies. Every cost advantage the category is now pricing comes from generation, and generation runs on inputs. If a court decides that some of those inputs belonged to someone else, the economics change for the whole cohort at once, not for one defendant. Kunlun’s own filing shows what is at stake: gross margin already fell 15.6 points as costs rose 406%, so the AI advantage is thinner than the growth rate suggests even before anyone litigates it.
Regulation arrived at the same place from the other direction. China’s broadcasting administration set the thresholds on 2026-08-17 for rules in force 2026-09-01, and AI-generated micro-drama now has its own tier at roughly a quarter of the live-action level. Make it with actors and CNY 3 million buys you the light review track; make it with a model and CNY 800,000 does not. The regulator has decided that cheaper production deserves closer reading, which is the same judgment a copyright plaintiff is asking a California court to make.
Against all of that, the week’s most useful number came from outside the fight. Omdia put American micro-drama revenue at about $1.5 billion for 2026 on 66 million monthly viewers, and measured ReelShort’s daily phone engagement at about 38 minutes, ahead of three general streamers. Almost every demand figure this ranking has carried was produced by a company selling into the market it was sizing. This one was not, and it says the audience is real and larger than the app cohort has been able to prove on its own.

The Structural Brand Power Index evaluates 26 companies across five weighted dimensions: Content Strength (20%), Narrative Ownership (20%), Distribution Power (25%), Community Strength (20%), and Monetization Infrastructure (15%). Scores update on verifiable public signals inside the research window, the seven days of news each issue scores; this issue’s runs 2026-08-17 to 2026-08-23, measured from the Issue 23 (W34-2026) baseline published 2026-08-23. Tier thresholds: Dominant 85 to 100, Strong 70 to 84, Emerging 55 to 69, Niche 40 to 54, Limited below 40. A change of 0.40 points or more in one issue is material. Under the missed-deadline rule adopted 2026-08-12, a company’s own published date that expires unmet takes a one-time deduction on the dimension the promise concerned.
W35 Movers
Distribution 72 to 74, monetization 88 to 90, content 60 to 61, community 55 to 54. Kunlun Tech’s interim report is the largest disclosure of the week: AI short-drama revenue of RMB 1.534 billion for the half, up 163%, monthly gross billings above $65 million at the end of June, and SensorTower data placing the group first in overseas short-drama monthly users with FreeReels first by downloads. The community deduction is the other half of the same document. Segment costs rose 406%, group selling expenses rose 83% on marketing and channel fees, and gross margin fell 15.6 points. The filing itself says this growth is bought.
Content 58 to 59, narrative 56 to 57, monetization 62 to 63. Both events flagged as pending last issue landed on their dates. THE MISFITS placed a scripted series inside a Tencent game’s world rather than beside it, made with a creator whose audience came with him. The Kantar survey of 1,045 viewers is neither independent research nor a bare claim: Quick TV commissioned it and Kantar ran the fieldwork in May. Its 84% brand recall figure is aimed at the same buyer who funded the series. The question from its first cycle is still open: no evidence yet that its completion gap is closing.
Content 84 to 86, narrative 78 to 79, monetization 76 to 75. Enlightent measured its domestic short-form drama share at 50% in June, doubled from March and first place for the first time, with its own original The Ferryman 10th Anniversary reaching a peak daily share near 60%. Three originals sit in the top ten contributors to international membership revenue, which grew over 300% in a year. The monetization deduction is where the gain sits: total revenue fell 5% year over year and the company posted a non-GAAP operating loss where it had operating income a year earlier. Against the first quarter, that loss narrowed sharply.
Community 76.5 to 78.5. Omdia’s reading of Sensor Tower data puts daily mobile viewing time at about 38 minutes, up 40% in the second quarter and ahead of Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ on phones. Every audience number this ranking had previously carried for ReelShort was a company view count; this is the first one produced by someone else, which is why it scores in a week with no company announcement at all. It is not the figure this ranking was watching for. No Bound by Duty viewership number exists, and published reviews of that title disagree on whether it runs 49 episodes or 68.
Monetization 82 to 83, content 60 to 61. Its executives told Reuters the platform is on track for more than $100 million in annual sales, that a series runs 50 to 75 episodes at $100,000 to $300,000 over about three months, and that the audience is 99.9% female. Parent Inkitt is at roughly 135 staff, 35 of them hired recently, and adding one or two video producers a week. The figures are the company’s own, but this is the first time it has put its scale on the record with a wire service. The gain stays below the materiality threshold because 46 days after the Ironblood launch not one title has a reception number.
Content 30 to 31. The Español Collection announced 2026-08-19 adds more than ten Spanish-language originals, including La Esposa por Contrato and El Jardinero del Millonario. It is the first dated content event since April, when the company pivoted to a revenue-share model, and it ends four months of silence. The gain is small because the announcement went out through a self-publishing wire service and carries no audience, revenue or completion figure.
Flat Lines
DramaBox, 83.25. The Latin American slate story this ranking scored last issue carries a publication timestamp of 2026-08-17, one day inside this week’s research period. Last issue flagged that it could not read the date and scored the event anyway, so the credit was given a week early. It is not given twice, and the flag is now closed. Besando al Hermano Equivocado went live 2026-08-17 and Soy la Novia de mi Peor Enemigo is dated 2026-08-27, in the next issue’s period.
GoodShort, 60.70, and Google / 100 Zeros, 59.45. A trade profile of GoodShort’s studio head ran 2026-08-20 with $220 million of 2025 revenue and a rise from fourth to third place; a near-identical piece ran six days later. Placed promotion carrying last year’s figures is not a 2026 event. Variety named 100 Zeros’ first title on 2026-08-21, Kenan Thompson’s MisTaken, and has him set to star. Six months after the slate announcement, no 100 Zeros title has reached an audience.
ByteDance, 68.15, and Warner Bros. Discovery, 46.85. A Short Dramas button became widely visible inside TikTok around 2026-08-20, but the only account of it states that no announcement exists and assembles the claim from earlier confirmations. Two write-ups this week describe the HBO Max Shorts test as new; it launched 2026-07-28. Both were checked against the original announcements before the flat call.
Disney, JioHotstar, Netflix, Holywater, Amazon, ShortMax, NetShort, Lifetime / A+E, GammaTime, COL Group / BeLive, Viu, RTP, KLIP, Both Worlds and Mansa recorded no dated event this week. Disney’s remains the most expensive: five weeks after the Locker Diaries: Descendants premiere there is still no viewership figure of any kind, and the TikTok pilot announced on 2026-08-05 still has no start date.
Structural Gaps
Crazy Maple Studio, ReelShort and New Leaf Publishing are suing Skywork AI, Kunlun Tech’s AI arm, for copyright infringement in the Central District of California. The answer is due 2026-09-21. Every cost advantage this category is pricing comes from generation, and generation runs on inputs. A ruling that some of those inputs were someone else’s property would reprice the whole cohort at once, not one defendant. Kunlun’s own filing shows the advantage is already thinner than the growth rate suggests: gross margin down 15.6 points as segment costs rose 406%.
This gap has been open since the ranking began and moves for the first time. Omdia, via Reuters on 2026-08-18, put US micro-drama revenue at about $1.5 billion for 2026 on 66 million monthly viewers last year, against 26 million in 2024. The same reporting carries CandyJar’s $100 million sales run rate and ReelShort’s 38-minute daily engagement. Supply still arrives faster than demand evidence, but the demand side is now measured by a firm with nothing in the race rather than asserted by the companies competing in it.
For the first time two ranked companies put AI production numbers on the record in the same week. Kunlun reports RMB 1.534 billion of AI short-drama revenue for the half and over 90% of DramaWave’s July additions machine-made; iQIYI reports AI-generated work at over half its micro-drama unique visitors in June, 16 such titles released under revenue sharing, and cost and time savings of 70% to 90% on suitable formats. China’s regulator answered on 2026-08-17 by giving AI its own review thresholds from 2026-09-01, at roughly a quarter of the live-action levels.
No giant commissioned anything this week. Disney still runs the only original programming among the six and still has not released a Locker Diaries number. The one company that put original vertical drama inside its own app was WEBTOON, which is not a streamer: six live-action series adapted from webcomics with a combined billion-plus reads, the first live-action content it has ever carried.
Three arrivals this week, none of them a paid drama app: WEBTOON’s six originals on 2026-08-17, EPIC Studios and Rusk Media committing to 50 titles for Alright! TV on 2026-08-20 with 250 targeted by mid-2027, and aTwist dating its launch to 2026-09-03. The aTwist row was corrected twice this issue: it has not launched, and Cineverse stepped back from equal partner to passive minority holder in June.

Detailed Predictions
Four of five. DramaWave, Quick TV and iQiYi were all called up and all rose; Amazon was called flat and held. ReelShort was the miss: the hold was conditioned on the absence of a viewership figure for one title, and what arrived instead was a measurement of the whole platform from a research firm. Of the five automated forecast methods, the best available prediction was that nothing would change, at 77% accuracy, and it beat both methods that predicted movement.
